Because situations often create heroes, and today, Liverpool ‘s hero is a name no one would have expected: Curtis Jones. It’s strange enough that he broke into the starting lineup. But what’s even stranger is that he both won a penalty and scored the winning goal, defeating Chelsea 2-1.

Liverpool Player Ratings

Caoimhin Kelleher – 6 – Didn’t do much and didn’t make any big saves, and at 1-1 he was no match for Nicholas Jackson.

Andrew Robertson – 7 – Didn’t have any major problems dealing with Noni Madueke, playing up to par and useful in both attack and defense. Although he didn’t get many chances to add to the attack.

Virgil van Dijk – 7 – The big man in defense, although he has some slip-ups, overall he is still excellent. He coordinates with his teammates without any mistakes.

Ibrahima Konaté – 6 – Didn’t get tested much in the first half. But five minutes into the second he was caught offside a split second too late, allowing Nicolas Jackson to level at 1-1 and VAR ruled out offside. Fortunately, he survived with the win.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7 – Had to work hard defensively given Chelsea’s obvious left-footedness, but did a quality job. Especially today when the emphasis was on defence.

Curtis Jones – 9 – Came on in midfield for McAllister and did well to get a penalty up front in the 27th minute. He almost won a second in stoppage time but the referee overturned it after a VAR check. He made a perfect run into the net in the second half to put the Reds 2-1 up just moments after conceding.

Ryan Gravenberch – 8 – Worked quite hard in the midfield and didn’t get many chances to move the ball around, but did well as a holding midfielder.

Cody Gakpo – 6 – Had a quiet first half and was unlucky when Salah’s 32nd-minute shot was ruled offside. Had a few chances in the second half. But they weren’t as accurate as they should have been and were promptly taken off.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 7 – Didn’t have a great game in attack. But was more productive defensively today, particularly with a crucial block of Cole Palmer’s second-half effort.

Mohamed Salah – 7 – Was constantly looking for space and took the lead with a confident penalty in the 28th minute. But didn’t have many chances to show off his skills.

Diogo Jota – 5 – The fans were shocked when he fell down after just 7 minutes. When Tosin Adarabioyo fell on him. He was able to continue playing for a while. But was eventually taken off after about half an hour when he could no longer hold on.

Darwin Nunez (on for Jota 30′) – 5 – Still not Darwin at his peak. Came on for the first half hour but failed to create the threat he deserved throughout his time on the pitch.

Luis Diaz (on for Gakpo 65′) – 6 – Had few chances with the ยูฟ่าเบท ball and hardly saw any finishing from the Colombian winger.

Alexis Mac Allister (on for Jones 81′) – 5 – Wasn’t 100% fit and was a late substitute and didn’t make much of an impact in the final ten minutes. But he did provide some freshness in midfield.

Joe Gomez (on for Alexander-Arnold 81′) – 5 – Came on to use his freshness to stop Chelsea’s attacks on the wings and didn’t make any mistakes.
